The presentation, delivered by the Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) Ghana at the 24th Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (GATCA), focused on the pivotal role of Air Traffic Control (ATC) in aircraft investigations. Held with the theme “Securing the Future of Our Skies,” the presentation highlighted the collaborative efforts required between ATC and aviation safety investigators to ensure the safety of air travel. The Commissioner discussed how air traffic controllers’ actions and insights are critical in the investigation process and in identifying ways to prevent accidents.
To illustrate the role of ATC in aircraft investigations, two real-world case studies were presented, showcasing the involvement of air traffic controllers in the investigation process. Each case study underscored the importance of timely and accurate information provided by ATC during investigations and how such contributions can significantly impact the safety improvements that follow.

The Commissioner also touched on the importance of regional collaboration and the role of the West Africa Society of Air Safety Investigators (WASASI) in fostering a unified approach to aviation safety.
The presentation concluded by reinforcing the essential role that air traffic controllers play in the aircraft investigation process, as well as their involvement in notifying investigators, gathering evidence, and analyzing data is crucial to improving air safety. By continuing to collaborate with investigators and stakeholders, ATC will help secure the future of our skies, making air travel safer for all. The Commissioner expressed confidence that through continuous training, innovation, and regional collaboration, Ghana and the broader West African aviation community can meet the challenges of the future and safeguard the safety of our airspace.
