The Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB-Ghana) has reiterated that its mandate does not cover accidents or incidents involving military aircraft.
This clarification follows growing public concern about aviation safety in the wake of the recent military helicopter crash in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, which tragically resulted in eight fatalities.
Addressing the media in Accra on August 26, 2025, Acting Commissioner of AIB-Ghana, Mr. John Wumborti, explained that the Bureau’s functions are guided by the framework of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which restricts its jurisdiction exclusively to civil aviation operations.
Mr. Wumborti emphasized that AIB-Ghana remains committed to its statutory role of investigating and preventing accidents within the civil aviation sector. He further noted that incidents involving military aircraft fall under the responsibility of other state institutions designated to handle such matters.
