The Acting Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB Ghana), Mr John Wumborti, has been appointed Interim President of the West African Society of Air Safety Investigators (WASASI), the regional chapter of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI).
The appointment, announced on Thursday, July 16, 2026, is expected to strengthen Ghana’s representation in regional and global aviation safety discussions while providing an opportunity to advance aircraft accident investigation capacity within the country and the West African sub-region.
Mr Wumborti assumes the position pending the organisation of elections by WASASI.
Speaking after the announcement, Mr Wumborti described the appointment as a significant milestone for both Ghana and the Bureau, saying it would enable the country to contribute more effectively to international decision-making on aircraft accident investigations.
He explained that WASASI is the West African chapter of ISASI, the global professional body for air safety investigators, and that by virtue of his appointment he automatically becomes a member of the ISASI Council, where major decisions on aircraft accident investigation and aviation safety are taken.
“This is a milestone for Ghana because it gives us a seat at the table where important decisions on the enhancement of aircraft accident investigations are made. It also provides an opportunity for us to present the challenges facing aircraft accident investigation in Ghana and the West African region,” he stated.
According to him, Ghana’s aircraft accident investigation system is still developing and requires continuous capacity building through specialised training, technical support and international collaboration.
He said the new role would enable him to advocate for support from the international aviation safety community to strengthen the west African investigation capabilities and improve aviation safety.
Mr Wumborti indicated that one of his immediate priorities would be to engage fellow investigators across the West African sub-region to identify common challenges and develop a unified agenda to be presented at the international level.
He said the concerns of the region would be tabled at the ISASI Annual Seminar scheduled to take place in Boston, United States of America, in September this year.
Mr Wumborti’s appointment is expected to further enhance Ghana’s profile in the global aviation safety community while strengthening cooperation among air safety investigators in West Africa towards the prevention of aircraft accidents and incidents.
WASASI is committed to improving aviation safety by promoting the exchange of ideas, experiences and information arising from aircraft accident and incident investigations.
The organisation also seeks to advance technical knowledge through education, lectures, presentations and professional collaboration among air safety investigators.
